NAME: The Whip TYPE: fiction based on facts
AUTHOR: Karen Konazion
This is an extraordinary story particularly as its origin is based on facts which are revealed as endnotes. The story begins in the east but progresses as the life of the character who becomes 'Charley' advances. This part is sad as it reveals many customs in the care of homeless children that we would prefer to think never happened. Circumstances bring our character to the West where she assumes the character of a man and is able to successfully continue the charade until her death. That she was furthermore a successful stage coach driver, much admired adds to the drama of the story. Shows courage and determination to an extraordinary degree in a woman who worked with what she had and refused to give up. A good read.
