Have You Ever Held a Hummingbird?

A male Ruby-throated Hummingbird in flight. Hummingbird

Hummingbird In Flight

Have you ever held a hummingbird

Jeweled wings at perfect rest?

It would lie quite still

In the palm of your hand

As though it were home in a nest.

Astonished, you'd gaze, even as I

At the feathers so pink and green,

And at the form God gave this exquisite

Gem, enabling its meals on wings.

My hand trembled as it reached out

To caress the gilded wings,

But off she flew in a flash of light

To adventures as yet unseen.
